VMO-6 TODAY
This page is intended to keep VMO-6ers informed on planned get-togethers and other information.
Hello VMO-Sixers....

A “Happy Fourth of July” to you!

As most of y'all know, I accepted the VMO-6 Coordinator responsibilities for our Pensacola Reunion, and I would like to invite all VMO-6 members, family, and friends to attend our Reunion in early November. FYI, my most recent Excel Spreadsheet indicates that we could have 90+/- Pensacola Reunion attendees (that includes the 'Sixer' and guests) - so a very nice turnout is anticipated! We want this to be a fun time to share in remembrances of the times in our Corps and in VMO-6...we would like to see all of you in Pensacola!!
In addition to contracting for the rooms & rates at the Hampton Inn, I have reached a Memorandum of Understanding with a source who does local area military reunions, including the transportation (Trolleys) to the Agenda events. I sincerely believe the local transportation will make "getting around town" much easier, and it will insure that our Group stays together for the scheduled events...BUT, more importantly, I don't want anyone drinking and driving - a terrible accident or a DUI charge will absolutely ruin the Reunion event for all of us.... Additionally, due to the high volume of traffic that is anticipated for the Air Show, I do not recommend that individuals drive to NAS Pensacola. In fact, that is another reason that I decided to sign an Agreement with a local transportation provider. His "Trolleys" will be able to get our group through the gates quicker and easier. Plus, the owner of the transportation company has agreed to provide some limited "shuttle service" for us between the Naval Aviation Museum and the Air Show for those who need/desire it.

It is important that you are aware this email will be the only notification that you will receive from me regarding our VMO-6 plans for the Pensacola Reunion. However, for those Squadron members who are definitely attending our Reunion, I will continue sending periodic updates (enhancement "tweaks" to the Plan) via email. At least one of my periodic email updates will contain a listing of Beach restaurants, telephone numbers, and appropriate clothing for the events. Additionally, "Visit Pensacola" will provide a small "goodie bag" of local information for each Squadron member that will be distributed during your Check-In process at the Hampton Inn.

For your information and reading pleasure, I have "attached" three (3) different pieces of information to this email, so please "open" and read each one....

For those who haven't, please follow the information and instructions that are described in my email attachment titled, "VMO-6 Reunion for Hampton Inn Pensacola Beach".

We are looking forward to seeing each and every one of you in Pensacola in November!!

VMO-6 Reunion 2015 Information and Registration Form

Hello VMO-6’er,

If you are receiving this information, then you previously indicated that you plan to
attend our upcoming Reunion! As a reminder, the 2015 VMO-6 Reunion will be November 5-8,
HQ’d at the Hampton Inn on Pensacola Beach, FL. As most of you know, for each Reunion, a Squadron Coordinator is needed to establish “housing” (hotel), set-up the Hospitality Room (“Hooch”), and arrange & coordinate Squadron activities for the “gathering.” I accepted the Coordinator duties for our 2015 Reunion and would like to formally invite all VMO-6 members, their family, and friends to attend our Reunion “on the Beach” (FMF) in Pensacola later this year.

We truly want this to be a fun time to share in remembrances of our times in the Corps and in VMO-6. From the beginning, my goal has been: “R, R, & R” – do it “R”ight; keep the cost “R”easonable, and ensure it is “R”espectful. Reunions like this are a great way to reacquaint ourselves with VMO-6 Squadron members whom have long since faded from memory; or, whom
you may have met at previous reunions; and, it is certainly an appropriate time to remember
those Squadron members who have “…slipped the surly bonds of earth…”. Of course, Pensacola is known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” and as such, it represents a return to our aviation “roots” for many of us; for others, it is a great location for our Squadron Reunion. We truly hope that many of our VMO-6 members will attend the November event. No matter when you were in our Squadron – Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa or at other times – please make plans to join us in Pensacola!

It is important that you are aware this email will be the only notification that you will receive from me regarding our VMO-6 Plans for the Pensacola Reunion....  However, for those Squadron members who are definitely attending our Reunion, I will continue to send periodic updates (enhancement "tweaks" to the Plan) via email. FYI, at least one of my periodic email updates will contain a listing of Beach restaurants, telephone numbers, and appropriate clothing for the events. Therefore, it is important for you to let me know if you change your email address so I can update our records and ensure that you receive the periodic updates. For the ‘Sixers’ who have questions concerning the Agenda, or just need additional Reunion information, please feel free to contact me – my contact information is included at the end of this letter.

Be sure that you READ my email attachment titled, “VMO-6 Agenda” – it contains all of the “hot scoop” for our Squadron’s planned daily activities. Also, please note there are some Agenda events listed as, “on your own” – that means “your own choice & at your own expense.”

FYI, my most recent Excel Spreadsheet indicates we could have 90+/- Pensacola Reunion attendees (includes ‘Sixer’ and guests) - a very nice turnout is anticipated! If you still plan to attend, please complete the attached VMO-6 Registration Form and mail it back to me along with your check. This will “confirm” your Reservations for VMO-6 Squadron activities associated with our 2015 Pensacola Reunion, AND it will support our Hospitality Room. Your Registration fee will cover such expenses as the Hospitality Room rental, local Trolley transportation to/from the Squadron activities (but, NOT to/from the PNS airport – airport transportation to/from the Hampton Inn will be “your own choice & at your own expense”), lunch at McGuire’s, dinner at the Tiger Point Golf Club, the “show-center” reserved seating for the Blue Angels’ Homecoming Air Show, Wall South/Marine Aviation Memorial Tower ceremonies, USMC Birthday cake, etc.

IMPORTANT: I need to receive your completed Registration Form along with your payment no later than August 15, 2015. These funds are needed in advance of the event to confirm participation numbers for our local transportation provider, several restaurants, secure the Blue Angels “Homecoming Air Show” show-center reserved seating, Wall South ceremonies, USMC Birthday, etc.; and, to prepare our Hospitality Room (“Hooch”) in advance of your arrival.

Finally, after receiving this email, I am requesting a return email from you stating that you have received this information, your plans for attending the Reunion, and any contact information updates. FYI, we are continuing to update our VMO-6 members’ Contact List, so we would like to obtain as many valid email contacts as possible to reduce mailing costs for future communications.

If you haven't made your lodging reservations, then you need to step-up and make your reservations soon - for those Squadron Members who have already made their Reservations, THANKS!!

Here is the Hampton Inn Pensacola Beach information, again:
I signed a contract with the Hampton Inn Pensacola Beach - 2 Via De Luna, Pensacola Beach, Florida, 32561 (TEL: 1-800-320-8108 ;  1-850-932-6800; FAX: 1-850-932-6833).  YOU are personally responsible for making your own reservation and arranging your own payment - that part is not on me!!  Basically, the beachfront hotel offers two different type rooms - one on the Gulf of Mexico with a private balcony, and the other option is located on the Santa Rosa Sound side without a balcony.  Both room locations are offered with Twin Beds, or if you prefer, a King Bed can be selected.  In order to receive the negotiated room rates, you must use our 3-letter Group Code:  VMO.  The Gulf front room rate is $159 (plus tax), and the Sound side room rate is $139 (plus tax) - both room rates include a complimentary hot breakfast.

To make your reservations, you can either call direct to the hotel (1-800-320-8108 or 1-850-932-6800) and ask for "Reservations" - be sure to use our Group Code VMO; or, if you prefer, log into their website to book your room ( http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/florida/hampton-inn-pensacola-beach-PNSFLHX/index.html ).  Your selected dates must be within the time period the rooms are blocked for our group.  The dates for our group:  Arrival 2015-11-05 and Departure 2015-11-08.  If you try to book dates outside this range, you will most likely get a message that there are insufficient rooms available.  In that case, make your reservation directly with the hotel by calling one of the numbers above.  For those folks who would like to come a few days prior to our Reunion dates, or extend their stay a little longer after the Reunion, there will be a limited number of rooms available at our rates.  However, you will need to request your rooms outside the Reunion dates directly with the hotel.  I have contracted for a "block" of rooms, but it is not for an unlimited period of time, nor for an infinite number of rooms.  Our “block” of rooms guarantees prices & availability, but our “block” will only be available through August 31, 2015 – after that date, room availability & rates are no longer guaranteed, so you will be on your own for lodging accommodations.

FYI, the Beach hotels are generally fully booked for the “Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show” week, so I encourage each of you to book now!!  If you w-a-i-t too long, the “block” of rooms that I contracted for may be sold out, and you'll be on your own for finding accommodations.  Just make it easy on yourself - git'er done!!

ALL,                                                                         5 Oct 15  12:40 PM
Here is the Roster of Squadron mates and guests who will be attending our VMO-6 Reunion, as of this date... Currently, we have 78 people who are now "confirmed" attendees - YES, our group has grown - and, there are another 2-4 folks who have indicated they are planning to attend....

I am still "tweaking" a couple of items for our Agenda, and I'll be updating you with those changes, along with other details, maybe even a surprise or two - STAY TUNED and check your email often - time is growing closer for our get together in Pensacola!

Steve

I am sending several "links" that you can use to obtain additional details about our Reunion Agenda (there have been several changes to our original Agenda); the Naval Aviation Museum and "Homecoming Air Show" that we will be attending on Friday, November 6; and, the Pensacola Yacht Club where we will have our Saturday evening dinner.

I have been working with Tom McKean (owner of "Beach Bum Trolley") for a couple of months, and I enlisted his help with several parts of our Pensacola Reunion Agenda. Tom was active duty Navy, and has a great understanding of military reunions, and he has been a local coordinator for military reunions, corporate events, weddings, and private parties in the Pensacola area for quite some time. Also, I "volunteer" a couple of days a week at the Naval Aviation Museum and can personally attest to his capabilities and success with handling numerous military reunions!

After initially putting together our agenda, I shared it with Tom and asked him to critique it, and to post it on his website. After several meetings with Tom, I added some of his recommendations in an effort to make it a super Reunion for us. FYI, Beach Bum Trolley will be our sole provider of transportation and you can checkout his website for additional details about his company and our latest agenda. Here is what you will need to do to access his Home Page: http://www.beachbumtrolley.com/ ;after you "click" that link and get to his Home Page; then, go to his link for the "Reunion Page"; once you "click" the "Reunion Page", it will take you to the "Reunion Planning and Transportation" page; then, scroll down that page to "Current Reunions Scheduled For Pensacola" until you get to Nov. 05 - 08, 2015 VMO - 6 Reunion ; then, click the VMO - 6 Reunion and it will take you to our updated Agenda. While you are looking at the VMO-6 Reunion Agenda, you can "click" the link for Lunch at McGuire's Irish Pub and check-out the Beach Bum Trolley menu at McGuire's to view our menu options for lunch. Please Note: the Saturday evening dinner location was changed to the Pensacola Yacht Club (unfortunately, the original location at the Tiger Point Golf Course Club had a fire a few months ago and I was not satisfied with the progress of the re-build, and was not convinced the TPGCC facility would be fully repaired in time for our dinner - so, I moved the location to the Pensacola Yacht Club....

P.S. In case you did not receive the email from Ed Kufeldt re: Jim Lawrence flying his VMO-6 Bird Dog to Pensacola for our Reunion, here is the information Ed sent a few days ago:

"As a member of VMO-6, Jim Lawrence flew the O-1 Birddog in '68-69 before the OV-10s arrived. While in the squadron, four fellow O-1 aircrew members lost their lives as a result of being shot down. Jim was close friends with them and he recently decided to purchase a Birddog, have it painted with VMO-6 markings, and inscribe the names of the lost crew members on the side of the aircraft as a flying memorial. Below is a link to the VMO-6 Memorial website with Jim's comments and pictures of his aircraft. If everything goes as planned, Jim will be flying his Birddog from Atlanta to Pensacola and be displayed at the NAS Pensacola Open House 6-7 November, and for the squadron reunion.

This email is being sent to all squadron members with a known email address.

SF,

Ed

Reunion Update #2 Info - NOTE: Some parts of this information may require a response from you:
Saturday Evening Dinner @ Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC)
The dinner will be buffet style with the following menu
Salad
Dinner Rolls
Vegetable - Vegetable Medley
Starch - New potatoes
Entrees - Seafood - Pecan Crusted Grouper; and, Meat - Beef Pot Roast
Dessert - Marine Corps Birthday Cake
As previously noted, the Dinner will be buffet style, and will include a drink station (tea, coffee & water - serve yourself), as well as a "cash bar"($, M/C, VISA).
If you have "special dietary requirements," please let me know so I can inform the PYC manager.
The recommended "dress code" for our Saturday night dinner is "Business Casual" - there is no requirement for a coat & tie. For the men, it should be a nice pair of slacks and a shirt with a collar (no tie required, and a coat is optional). For the ladies, it is the same - "Business Casual." For the ladies in particular, sometimes the PYC can be "cool inside," so some of the ladies may want to consider having a sweater or light jacket at the Saturday evening dinner. Please keep in mind, part of our Dinner will include a small USMC celebration - so, no shower shoes, shorts, or a light coat of oil is permitted!

"Dress Code" - All of the other events (except Saturday night) will just be "casual".... Please note that during early November, we may have some cool early morning/late evening temps, so I strongly recommend that you consider bringing a sweater or a light jacket with you...... Questions?
Weather - Typically, early November is a very nice time of the year for weather in the Pensacola area. Generally, the month of November is characterized by falling daily high temperatures, with daily highs decreasing from 74°F (early November) to 66°F (late November) over the course of the month, exceeding 81°F or dropping below 56°F only one day in ten. You can forget hurricane conditions - expect plenty of sunshine with only small chances of rain. However, early November is considered a weather transition month for our temperatures and humidity - you can expect "reasonable" humidity conditions and very comfortable daytime temps in the mid-70's with cool early morning/late evening temps (mid-to-high 50's). Also, you can expect the Gulf of Mexico water temps to be in the upper 60's, perhaps 70 degrees during the very early part of November. I strongly recommend that you bring a sweater and/or a light jacket for the early morning and late evening times (the ladies might need something for the Naval Aviation Museum, as well).
I believe that is enough information for this Update......

Steve

Seville Quarter (Bars & Clubs, Nightlife)
Location and Contact Information

Phone Number: 1-850-434-6211
Seville Quarter is proud to be the Gulf Coast’s Entertainment Destination since 1967. We’ve got a rich history dating back over four decades, when Bob Snow took a dilapidated 19th century warehouse on East Government Street and transformed it into “Rosie O’Grady’s Warehouse,” a beer-and-peanuts saloon offering up heaping portions of Dixieland jazz and good times.
Since then Seville Quarter has grown to include seven rooms — the original Rosie O’Grady’s, Phineas Phogg’s, Lili Marlene’s, Apple Annie’s, Fast Eddie’s, End o’ the Alleyand Palace Café — each with its own theme and atmosphere. There’s also the Seville Party Plaza, an outdoor concert venue, and Heritage Hall, a spacious banquet and eventfacility.
Wilmer Mitchell and his family have been operating Seville Quarter since 1988, and under their leadership Seville has continued to garner accolades and build community partnerships.
Seville Quarter offers the best entertainment lineup along the Gulf Coast, fine dining with a unique ambience, and a gift shop featuring the best wines at the best prices. Take a tour online, come on down and get yourself a membership card — you’re bound to fall in love with the original “Good Time Emporium.”

  Reunion Update #5 Info...

For this update, I need your help with some specific information about our Pensacola Reunion Squadron Mates. I am in the process of trying to determine the following:
The "youngest" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion.
The "oldest" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion.
The "most senior officer" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion.
The "most senior enlisted" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion.
If you think you "fit" one (or more) of those categories, please send me your name, category, rank, and date of birth. When you respond, please reply only to me - DO NOT "REPLY ALL"!!

I believe that I have a good idea who is the "oldest" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion, but "youngest" is a mystery to me... If you think that you are that person, or if you think you know who that person may be, send me an email and I'll try to determine the rest.... Also, I believe that I have an idea who is the "most senior officer" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion, but I'm not sure about the "most senior enlisted" Marine attending our Pensacola Reunion,.... So, again, if you think that you are that person, or if you think you know who that person may be, send me an email and I'll try to determine the rest.... Thanks!

Semper Fi,

Steve
